Virgen de Fatima (newborns to 6 year olds)

Project 1 – Building a new dormitory

The new dormitory was successfully completed earlier this year and now 10 toddlers aged 2 - 3 live in the dormitory, relieving some of the pressure from the mamitas that had overcrowded casitas and giving the little ones just that little more time to develop before being moved to the casitas with the older children.

Project 2 - Art and Reading Project

Art and reading is very important for children as they provide stimulation, encourages them to be creative, promotes self esteem and learning and keeps the children occupied. However the volunteers at Virgen de Fatima had plenty of time to give to the children but very little materials. Thanks to our volunteer Hilary Coyne we now have a cupboard with materials that the volunteers can access. We have also stocked it with books for the volunteers to read to the children.

However with time the materials will get used up and the the books read and we are therefore constantly open to donations of art materials and childrens books in Spanish.

Hogar Jose Soria (5 to 15 year olds)

Project 3 – Furnishing and Protecting the home

The new dormitory building that was inaugurated in October 2007 was done so with the furniture that the children were currently using in the home. However much of it is very tattered and worn. With the new building we would like to be able to give the children some new furnishings such as sofas, heaters (as it gets very cold in winter), cupboards, etc.

We would also like to build a wall of protection around the bottom of the home as the home backs on to a dangerous, busy road. The current protection is a wire fence that is in bad condition in parts and not only allows the children to leave but allows strangers in to the home.

Project 4 - Reading Programme

A local volunteer at the Hogar Jose Soria is setting up a reading programme within the childrens home. He has reviewed and selected appropriate books for the children and is involving local volunteers who will read these books with groups of 8 children. The children will meet three times a week and share books between 2. They will read and discuss the books as a group. In order to maintain the programme we will need 300bs a month (30 Euros)

Centro de Terapia ‘Varones’ (boys 11 to 17)

Project 5- Sports Project

The boys love sports! The boys have a patio in which they can play football, volleyball, etc.

This project aims to:

  • invest in equipment, e.g. balls, bibs, cones, goalposts and nets;
  • purchase team strips for their football matches (shorts and boots), which will be issued and collected before and after matches and managed by the administrator.

Kallutaca (handicapped adults age 20 and upwards)

Project 6 - Construction of a Living Room

The residents of Kallutaca dream of having an area where all 25 of them can sit together for recreational activities with the volunteers. The area they have at the moment was a converted storage area and is very small and uncomfortable and seats a maximum of 8 people.

Project 7- Other items for Kallutaca

We have fixed up one of the greenhouses and the animal areas and recently bought chickens and guinea pigs thanks to the kind donation made by Rosemary Benton in memory of her husband. We are always on the look out for funds to help maintain these greenhouses, animal areas (e.g., purchase of additional livestock), farm equipment (e.g., a mechanized cultivator and plastic sheets for the greenhouses).

Centro de Terapia ‘Mujeres’ (girls ages 11 - 17)

Project 8- Vocational Training

We currently have a project to provide training to the girls who live at the home enabling them to learn useful skills to help them obtain a job, when they leave the home. The project has been very successful so far. Donations towards the funding for the materials and salary for each course is very welcome:

  • typing and computer skills;
  • hairdressing;
  • knitting and crocheting.

We need approximately 1000bs (100 euros) a month to support the knitting and hairdressing courses.

We are in the process of completing the workshop for the computer classes. The teacher will work as a volunteer however we have very few working computers and for the classes to be a complete success we are hoping to obtain four more (second hand or new).

IDAI (mentally disabled -- all ages)

Project 9- Equipment for an Activity Room

The building has adequate space for the residents, but there is not sufficient staff nor activities for the residents to remain occupied and stimulated throughout the day. We are seeking to fit out an activity room to keep the children mentally and physically stimulated and thus improve their environment and behavior, which currently expresses frustration and aggression.

Project 10- Nappies for the children

The Pabellon Esperanza for young children in IDAI houses 15 children, most of whom require nappies. The home needs 224 nappies weekly just to have the children sleeping in the nappies and in the mornings and during their therapy sessions. The home is no longer recieivng the donation of nappies and is desperately looking for new supporters.

Funding Projects

Smaller projects (for example: maintenance work, supporting a workshop activity) are usually funded from PLN’s own resources.

Larger projects are proposed in writing and discussed and approved in a Board meeting, then submitted to a donor or an NGO (non governmental organization) for
financial support.

Throughout the year, PLN sells Christmas cards designed by the children!
